25 AMERICANS TRAIN, COMPETE AT DAET SURF-FEST
Daet, Camarines Norte, Aug. 6, 1998 - For two weeks this month, 25 American junior surfers are staying with Filipino foster families in Daet, Camarines Norte, while teaching promising Filipino surfers the proper way to surf and compete using international standards.
The young water sports enthusiasts are members of the Kalos Kagathos Foundation based in Los Angeles, California and are participating in the first Philippine-American Centennial Junior Surfing Cultural Exchange. The two-week program is geared to helping Filipino surfers improve their skills through interaction with their counterparts from the US.
While in Daet, the American surfers stay with families selected under the foster family program of the Surfing Association of the Philippines.
Highlights of the 2-week event include the 4th Daet Surfing Tournament from Aug 14-16, and a one-day fun surfing tournament pitting a Philippine selection against the visiting Americans.
SAPI, a non-stock, non-profit sports association committed to propagating wave surfing in the Philippines was organized four years ago. It is an associate member of the Association of Surfing Professionals and has recently been accepted as member of the International Surfing Association, the world governing body for surfing.
