RP LITTLE LEAGUERS SCORE IN ASIAN ELIMS
Manila, Aug. 2, 1998 - The Philippines, represented by national Little League champion Tacloban, scored back-to-back victories against Guam and the host team Thursday at the opening of the Little League Far East eliminations being held in Saipan.
The Filipino boys, aged 11-12, beat Guam, 3-2, in the morning match, and pulled out all stops in their hands-down victorious game with Saipan, 9-0.
The twin victories kept up the team's spirit through their loss, 0-17, the next day to defending champion Japan.
The Filipino boys face the Korean team Saturday, August 1, and the Hong Kong team Sunday.
The Philippine team was nearly disqualified for having only nine players; the league rules require at least a 12-man lineup.
Only nine players and a coach were able to fly out of Manila for Saipan last Wednesday, leaving behind five more players and two officials, who are still trying to book flights as of press time.
