EUGENE TORRE 4TH IN GERMAN CHESSFEST
Manila, July 29, 1998 - Filipino grandmaster Eugene Torre held to a draw Russia's top seed Peter Svidler, to cap a 3-wins, 4-draws, 2-losses record that landed him in 4th place overall in the Bad Homburg International Grandmaster Chess Chhampionship in Hamburg, Germany.
Playing white, Torre gave up a pawn on the 19th move, but the enacious Svidler returned it with a rook for a knight and a positional advantage. Torre, who became ASia's first Grandmaster in 1972, gave up another pawn late in the match but squeaked in two rooks for the deadlock via repetition of moves.
Victor Korchnoi grabbed the championship, while 22-year-old Svidler ranked second. Third placer was Arthur Yusupov, a former Russian who now lives in Germany.
The 46-year-old Torre will represent the Philippines for the 15th time in the chess Olympiad to be held this year in Elista, Republic of Kalmykia.
