RP ICE SKATING TEAM TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Manila, July 28, 1998 - The Philippines is participating in the ISI World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, from August 3 to August 8. The SM Megamall-Philippines ice skating team will represent the country.
"Our ice skaters need foreign exposure and this is what we need to hone our skills," said Ice Skating Union of the Philippines president Ric Camaligan, who is also senior vice president of Leisure Center, a member of the SM Group.
A total of 44 Filipino ice skaters, led by Neptali John Gonzales III and Michael Novales, will see action in the US meet.
The team's participation and all travel expenses are supported by SM, which has ice rinks at Megamall, Cebu and Southmall. Other sponsors are Pepsi, Bionade and Adidas, the official outfitter.
The Filipino skaters hope to improve on their third-place finish last year in Boston. The ranked fifth in their previous competitions in Houston (1995) and Seattle (1996).
The RP ice skating team had also competed in the Japan Figure Skating Championships, Cityplaza Open in Hong Kong, ISI Open Championships in Hong Kong and Skate Singapore '96.
