RP TEAM SHUT OUT OF ASIAN TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
Manila, July 25, 1998 - The Philippine team to the 12th Asian Track and Field Championships in Fukuoka flies back to Manila empty-handed, handicapped by lack of proper training and limited funding.
The Filipino athletes failed to grab a single medal in the 4-day tournament, but Philippine Amateur Track and Field president Go Teng Kok sees something good in the team's poor showing.
"The boys did well, but their opponents were really stronger. The stint will be good for them because they will be meeting the same runners in the Asian Games in Bangkok later this year. This was an opportunity for us to know the strength of our opponents," Go said.
Chinese athletes reigned supreme in almost all events and established several records, underscoring their supremacy in the meet where close to 800 athletes from 43 countries competed.
