MINOZA OUTRANKS U.S. CHAMP IN BRITISH OPEN
Manila, July 22, 1998 - Filipino ace golfer Frankie Minoza became the first Filipino to beat some of the best golfers in the world with his performance at the British Open, where he won $11,250 or roughly P461,250.
Although he finished tied for 52nd out of the 81 survivors in the punishing wind-swept cold British countryside, he outperformed the likes of defending champion Justin Leonard of the US, 1991 US Masters champion Ian Woosnam of Wales, England's Lee Westwood and Johnnie Walker Classic winner Fred Couples.
His next project is to prepare for the next Grand Slam test: the US PGA Championship, to be held at the Sahalee Country Club in Redmond, Washington from August 13 to August 16.
Minoza, a native of Bukidnon, is now headed for Japan to resume his quest for the top spot in the Order of Merit Japan. He is ranked fifth, very close behind American and Japanese frontrunners.
