MINOZA ENTERS BRITISH OPEN 3RD ROUND
Manila, July 19, 1998 - Philippine newspapers' sports sections all bannered today the exceptional feat of Filipino golfer Frankie Minoza, who made the cut Friday with a 5-over-par 75 that placed him seven shots behind American leader Brian Watts in the British Open golf championship at the Royal Birkdale course in Southport, England.
Despite the struggle to adjust too the cold rain and high winds, Minoza managed a two-day aggregate of 144.
The 38-year-old reigning Philippine Open champion earned the invitation to the British Open by topping the Asian Golf Circuit.
He has been paired with Carlos Franco of Paraguay in the third round, which opened under dark skies and even stronger gusts off the Irish Sea.
To play int he weekend is already a bonus for Minoza who had failed to make a cut in his previous Grand Slam appearance at the US Masters.
