P6.3-M FOR PENALOSA VS. UNBEATEN KOREAN
Manila, July 18, 1998 - A Korean challenger who has not lost in 12 fights will provide a most formidable opponent against Filipino World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa at a title fight on August 29 in Seoul, South Korea.
Penalosa will receive $150,000 (P6.3 million) tax-free, the biggest purse yet in Philippine boxing history for any Filipino boxer.
"I am so happy for Gerry, said Wakee Salud from Cebu City, where he and Penalosa are deep in training for his ward's fourth title defense fight.
The Korean challenger, In Joo Choo, 27, is ranked Number 4 in the world. He has won over 7 Filipinos. He knocked out two of his last three opponents: a top Thai fighter and a Russian slugger.
Penalosa retained his crown via a technical draw against Mexican Joel Luna Zarate in Makati last April 25. He leaves for Korea around the first week of August, to give himself time to acclimatize to cooler Korean weather.
