RP GOLFER MINOZA IN BRITISH OPEN
Manila, July 16, 1998 - Golfing enthusiasts are excited over the news that fellow Pinoy golfer Frankie Minoza will have another chance to test his skills against the best golfers in the world at the British Open.
Minoza's first crack at international tournaments was in 1992, when he played in the US Masters. An allergy cut short his attempt.
This year, Minoza was invited to play in the British Open because of his remarkable performance, winning four tournaments including the Philippine Open and the Kirin Open in Japan. Those victories put him on top of the Asian Tour Order or Merit, a title that qualified him to an automatic invitation to the world's oldest major golf championship.
Minoza has been paired with Tom Kite, former US Open champion and Andrew Colhart, one of the best golfers in Scotland.
Tiger Woods will tee off several flights ahead of them in the company of Nick Price and Per-ulrik Johansson.
As in his first international Masters tournament, Minoza faces a natural handicap in England. The weather has been unusually cold and is expected to hamper his bid. Forced to play bundled up in jackets and sweaters, Minoza's game will be an uphill battle against nature and all other odds all the way.
