ARE RP HORSE RACING CLUBS UP TO STANDARD?
Manila, July 15, 1998 - Philippine Racing Commission chairman Benedicto Katigbak will conduct ocular inspections of the premises of the Manila Jockey Club and the Philippine Racing Club to "know if their existing facilities conform with standards."
Katigbak's visits will be made during race days, beginning this weekend at the Santa Ana Park of the Philippine Racing Club.
The new racing chief said he would request the two clubs to carry out immediate improvements or renovation if any of their facilities are found to be defective or substandard.
The San Lazaro Hippodrome facilities of the Manila Jockey Club are currently being beefed up, with construction going on for a training track and several stalls and stables. The club, based in Sta. Cruz, downtown Manila, recently announced that its amenities meet international standards.
The PRCI, on the other hand, has announced that its operations will be transferred from Makati to the province of Cavite.
Katigbak said he is also concerned on the conditions of the underprivileged people whose livelihood depends mostly on horse racing. He noted that Philracom has already initiated the establishment of livelihood training programs for grooms, stable hands and helpers.
