RP GRABS WORLD ARNIS TITLE
Cebu City, July 2, 1998 - THE Philippine Team composed mostly of soldiers from the AFP bagged the Fifth World Eskrima Arnis Championship held at the University of San Carlos in Cebu last month.
Competing with twenty three other countries, the national team showed their supremacy in the field of martial arts through Arnis against their giant opponents.
The Philippines captured 23 gold, 13 silver and 6 bronze medals garnering a total of 41 awards for the over-all championship of the tournament.
Placing 1st runner-up is the USA which got 14 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. England is 2nd runner-up with 5 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals while Canada placed 3rd runner-up , winning 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals.
A total of 22 soldiers were part of the Philippine national team, competing in different categories of the competition.
Dionisio Canete, chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Philippine team said the soldiers even fought without body protectors. He added that the success of the team was credited to the gallant exhibition of strength and prowess of the soldiers.
In appreciation and to boost their morale, he recommended to the Chief of Staff, General Clemente Mariano the promotion to two ranks higher for those who got gold medals, a rank higher for silver and bronze medallists.
