BABY ARENAS QUITS "LARAWAN"
Manila, July 8, 1998 - The dominant character Dona Upeng in the classic Philippine play "Larawan" was to be played in its latest staging by socialite-politician Baby Arenas. It's a stage role many say the controversial personality could portray credibly without batting an eyelash.
But the latest news is that La Arenas has sent word from London that she will not be back in time to rehearse for the musical. She's still in London where her handsome youngest son is in school, and might not be back in time to rehearse for the musical.
Whether she was asked by "someone" to keep a low profile or "scared" from performing onstage is all based on speculation, which Manilans are sure will be clarified by the irrepressible Baby herself when she returns.
Meantime, Girlie Rodis and Celeste Legaspi, the producers of "Larawan" are panicking with only 10 days before the July 17 premiere at the Cultural Center of the Philippines main theater.
The original choice was Armida Siguion-Reyna, but she had to undergo an eye operation. Next choice was Sylvia La Torre, but she had gone back to the US when the role opened up. The producers are now considering versatile veteran stage actress Baby Barredo.
