APO HIKING JIM ON "MARCOS BURIAL"

Internet News, July 2, 1998 - The issue on the "Marcos Burial" is creating a long thread of discussion here onthe Net newsgroups. Here is one from Jim Paredes of the Apo Hiking Society fame:

Dear Everyone,
I have given the idea of burying Marcos in Libingan Ng Mga Bayani a lot of thought. While at first, the very idea of burying this dictator on hallowed ground disturbed and revulsed me no end, I finally gave in to reason and have mainly approved the thought given a few conditions that I believe must be met. They are

1) that Marcos be given a twenty one gun salute as a tribute but please aim the guns at the body

2) If that is not possible, then please bury him with honors and with Imelda

3) That we open the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani to all those who will die by Capital punishment. At least by doing this, we would spare ourselves of any hypocrisy we may feel about the whole thing.

Given those conditions, I believe that we can all sleep soundly knowing that Erap as a traditional politician will have fulifilled his promise to the Marcoses of a hero's burial for FM in exchange for votes, and that we would have some sense of catharsis since we will never see the stolen money nor hear any semblance of apology or remorse from the remaining Marcoses.
