GINEBRA LOSES IMPORT
Manila, June 30, 1998 - Ginebra San Miguel's struggle to stay alive and land a quarterfinals berth suffered a big blow when its high-scoring import Chris King abandoned the team and left for the United States with his wife and two kids.
King had requested Ginebra coach Robert Jaworski for an early release to return to the US and try to earn a slot on the US team to the Men's World Basketball Championship in July.
King, who played for the Vancouver Grizzlies, is also hoping to return tot he NBA following reports that the Atlanta Hawks was interested in him.
Assistant Ginebra coach Rino Salazar said the team has plenty of time to look for a replacement since the final game in the preliminary round has been rescheduled to July 7.
There are reports that Jaworski might recruit John Spencer, who played for the Hongkong team that won the ABC Champions Cup recently. Another possibility is Spencer's teammate Wayne Strickland.
The PBA allows two imports with average heights of 6'10" .
