EX-CHAMP NAVARETTE STABBED,
IN CRITICAL CONDITION
General Santos City, June 23, 1998
- World Boxing Council junior lightweight champion Rolando Navarette remains
in critical condition after a near-fatal stabbing at the Lion's Beach last
weekend.
The suspected knife-wielder is a former army soldier who was reportedly mauled by Navarette several years ago and bore a grudge.
The attacker reportedly used a butcher's knife, and almost disembowelled Navarette who had just come from a drinking spree and could not ward off the attack.
The former star of Philippine boxing, who earned the tag "Bad Boy From Dadiangas" because of his frequent brushes with the law, suffered cuts in his lungs and liver, and remains in hospital.
The suspect remains at large and is the object of a manhunt launched by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of Region 12. Police operatives are monitoring bus terminal and seaports to prevent him from leaving Cebu.
