CALTEX SAVES RP BOXING TEAM
Manila, June 21, 1998
- All members of the 36-man national boxing pool are returning to active
training for the Bangkok Asian Games in December and five other international
tournaments this year.
Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines president Manny Lopez recalled the boxers after giant oil firm Caltex came to the rescue of the country's boxers by sponsoring their training and participation in international events. The multi-million peso package includes medical benefits for the boxers.
Lopez said the help was like rain in the summer after his association failed to get the necessary funding from the Philippine Sports Commission.
"The support given by this firm has not only strengthened the boxer's program but also lifted their morale to a new height. This early, I can say that we are again facing a rosy future in amateur boxing," Lopez said.
Under the support agreement, Caltex will provide allowances for the members of the national training pool, purchase all the top-class equipment the training program needs, provide the pool members with a solid medical program and send national delegations to international events.
"These are the kind of support all the athletes need today. We are sure this kind of gesture will serve as inspiration to other businessmen in the private sector," Lopez added.
