ASAYTONO SKIPS TRAINING, OUT OF ASIAD TEAM?
Manila, June 20, 1998 - San Miguel's Nelson Asaytono is rumored to be on his way out of the Philippine national basketball team for the Bangkok Asian Games.
The Philippine Star reports that Asaytono is losing interest in being included in the line-up, and has been missing the team's Wednesday practice sessions.
"He's such a great player. He's too good to be ignored, but if he does not show interest to be a part of the team we cannot keep him," said national team coach Tim Cone.
Cone stressed that the players he will pick for the team must have a total package of talent, skill, attitude and t he ability to get along with the other players.
The present 19-man pool of cagers is to be pared down to a 14-man squad, which will play in two All-Star Games, beefed up by two imports, in mid-July.
Its first overseas test will come in August, when the national team competes in the tough Jones Cup in Taipei.
