BUNEVACZ RETIRING AFTER DISMAL PERFORMANCE
Manila, June 12, 1998 - David Bunevacz, controversial Fil-American athlete, has offered to retire from active competition after a dismal loss in his pet event at the closing of the 1998 National Centennial Track and Field Championships at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The spear thrown by the good-looking Bunevacz landed at a distance of only 62.02 meters, a good 13 meters off his personal best. Although he got a silver medal for the effort, Bunevacz was so embarrassed by his performance that he offered to quit right then and there.
"I might as well retire and do something else. My goal here is to show the world that I can do it and not embarrass our country," Bunevacz told sports writers. "That (the performance) was bad, real bad."
But the parting words of the athlete, better known to movie fans as the fiancée of Anjanette Abayari, give hope that it was not the last competition for Bunevacz.
"If only I have a coach who could tell me not to do this and not to do that, I cold vie strongly for the Asian Games. A little adjustment here and there that my coach would tell me would spell a big difference," he explained.
