PBL NOW HAS SOLE RIGHTS TO RECRUIT UAAP CAGERS
Manila, June 11, 1998 - The Philippine Basketball League has strengthened its position among the country's professional basketball groups, by signing up for the sole rights to recruit UAAP cagers.
PBL Commissioner Yeng Guiao's complements a landmark agreement forged earlier this year with the Philippine Basketball Association, and is geared towards a smooth transition of players and the removal of irritants among basketball leagues.
The Memorandum of Agreement covering the arrangement was signed yesterday by top officials of the PBL and the UAAP and is expected to push players' welfare while at the same time protect UAAP schools from piracy of other leagues.
Under the set up, the PBL will pay P20,000 as "developmental fee" for every UAAP player it recruits. The money will be used by the recipient school for sports development programs.
The PBL also agrees to notify school authorities regarding which students have been qualified to a PBL draft.
UAAP vice president Lellani Gonzales, UP Dean of Human Kinetics, explained the educators' views on the arrangement.
"This MOA will work both ways. The foremost concern of the schools is the academic aspect of the players. With the MOA, a plan can be worked out on scheduling the practices and ensure that the recruited student will finish his studies," Gonzales said.
