MUROS GETS GOLD, SILVER AT CENTENNIAL TRACKFEST
Manila, June 9, 1998 - Elma Muros remained the undisputed track queen of Southeast Asia when she bagged the gold in the long jump in yesterday's 1998 National Centennial track and field championships at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The 31-year-old track star jumped 6.30 meters to defeat Chinese Guo Chunfang, whose 6.28 meters was only good for a silver. A distant third was Filipina Elmira Lerma Balauitan, who leapt only 5.80 meters.
Elma's silver came later in the day when a young Indonesia school girl, her country's upcoming star, clocked 10.96 seconds against Elma's 12.01 in the 100-meter sprint.
Irene Joseph, at 16, is almost half Elma's age. She was surprised by her victory. "I did not expect to beat Elma. This is my first major achievement," said the girl whose age is revealed by her baby fat.
