Manila, June 22, 1998 - Manila awaits its biggest international home grown star, Lea Salonga, who is coming home for the July 4 Philippine gala premiere of the Disney film "Mulan" which features her as the singing voice of the title character.
"Mulan" is Lea's second Disney starrer, as she had previously provided the singing voice for Princess Jasmine in the hit animated movie Aladdin.
"Getting the part of Mulan was amazing," says Lea. "My heart felt like it was going to burst. Not too many people get to be part of this experience, and I'm fortunate that this is my second time. To be involved in the making of another Disney animated feature is fantastic. An because I am Asian, this particular project is extra special. It's really a cool thing."
The movie's theme song, "Reflection," provided Lea the opportunity to give a most stirring experience, one that reportedly had composer Matthew Wilder "on the verge of tears" during the recording session.
"The song, 'Reflection,' is n internal song," says Lea. "But it's pretty loud for an internal song. It's a beautiful song with a lot of meaning."
Based on one of China's most popular legends, Mulan chronicles the daring adventures of a brave young woman who disguises herself as a man and takes her father's place int he Imperial army to meet the threat of invasion by the villainous Hun leader.
