400 RUNNERS RELAY CENTENNIAL FLAME FROM SULU TO MANILA
Jolo, Sulu, May 25, 1998 - The Centennial Flame will start off from Jolo on Friday, May 29, on its way to Manila to symbolize the heroic stand of Filipino Muslims and their role in the achievement of Philippine Independence 100 years ago.
By speed boats, pump boats, colorful vintas and the billowing sails of the kumpits, the Flame will traverse the Sulu Seas after it is lit by Mayor Hadji Suhod Tan at the capital town of Jolo. The Flame is organized by the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) and the Philippine Centennial Commission, and highlights the athletes' celebration of the Independence Centennial.
At least 400 PATAFA runners are being picked to carry the flame through 24 of the most historical sites that revolted against Spain and the United States of America. PATAFA president Go Ten Kok is coordinating with Sultan Kiram , president of the Philippine Pencak Silat Sports Association.
>From Jolo, the Flame will sail to Basilan through Maluso and Isabela.
"Our Muslim fathers would be happy to know that we, their sons, are given a role in reviving at least a chapter of Philippine history during our Centennial celebration," Kiram said.
The Centennial Run which will carry the Flame through the length and breadth of the Philippines is a prelude to the staging of the National Open track and field championships, set for June 7-10 at the Rizal Memorial Oval. Also scheduled is a Centennial Marathon on June 7. Eleven nations are participating in the National Open.
