PINATUBO TO BECOME A NATIONAL PARK
San Fernando, Pampanga, May 9, 1998 - Plans are under way to develop Mount Pinatubo into a national park and a major tourist attraction.
Department of Tourism regional director Ronaldo Tiotuico told newsmen that the potential of Mount Pinatubo as a national park and a viable tourism and research destination was discovered by Tourism officials and travel agencies.
Government agencies sent officials to join the trek to the crater of Mount Pinatubo from April 28 to 30; they prepared a position paper to promote the volcano as a tourist attraction.
Tiotuico and Mabalacat tourism officer Guy Gilberto are preparing the design to convert the volcano to a tourist destination, while Lani Domingo of the National Commission for Indigenous People is drafting the declaration of Pinatubo as an ancestral domain and national park.
President Ramos has instructed Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor to prepare the Pinatubo Tourism Development Plan to fully explore the potentials of the volcano.
The design includes construction by the public works department of a trail to the crater, highlighted by a viewing deck near the crater which will be built by the Department of Tourism.
