SUBIC'S INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS, ARRIVALS SHOOT UP
Subic Bay Freeport, May 5, 1998 - Subic Bay International Airport entered its third year of operations with a record high in the number of international flights and foreign passenger arrivals in the firth 3 months of 1998.
"In three years, this airport has managed to be one of the country's primary gateways to the world. But more importantly, Subic Bay, through this airport, has been helping the Philippines in coping with the currency crisis in the region by bringing in more planes and more tourists to Subic Bay so that we will be able to create more opportunities for the country," said Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Chairman Richard Gordon.
A total of 382 international flights landed in Subic from January to March 1998, an increase of 39.42% from figures for the same period last year.
The number of passengers likewise steadily increased, from 36,019 in the first quarter of 11997 to 37,555 for the same period in 1998.
Cathay Pacific is the latest addition to the list of international airlines flying chartered flights to Subic. The first five are Astro Air International, U Land Airlines, Air Asia, Dragon Air and Far Eastern Air Transport.
The international charter flights have originated from Kuala Lumpur, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Taipei.
Subic is also the hub of operations of Federal Express, making it the major point of delivery for FedEx in Asia.
