CENTENNIAL COMMISSION TO
HONOR LAKAMBINI NG KATIPUNAN
Manila, May 2, 1998 -
As part of its goal to highlight the heroism of Filipino women in the centennial
celebrations, the National Centennial Commission - Women's Sector will
lead the nation in honoring Gregoria de Jesus, the brave Lakambini (muse)
of the Katipunan, on May 9, her 123rd birth anniversary. The program will
be held at the Nakpil-Bautista ancestral home along A. Bautista Street
(formerly Barbosa) in Quiapo, Manila.
The historic commemoration will be highlighted by wreath-laying ceremonies, a cultural presentation in honor of the heroine and inspirational messages from the Manila Mayor and some of the Lakambini's descendants. Her two surviving daughters, Mercedez Nakpil-Zialcita and Caridad Santos-Viola will grace the affair.
Oryang, as De Jesus was fondly called, had the risky task of safeguarding the documents of the Katipunan. She married Andres Bonifacio, the founder of the secret voluntary society, and was one of the foremost members of the Katipunan women's sector.
When Bonifacio dies, she sought refuge in the mountains of Pasig where she met Julio Nakpil, a leader of the Katipunan and a poet-musician. They fell in love, got married and had six children.
After the war against Spain, the family settled in the Nakpil-Bautista mansion were Oryang reared her children. the house was owned by Julio's sister Petrona Nakpil, and her husband, Dr. Ariston Bautista, the famous philanthropist.
