Manila, May 27, 1998 - It's all systems go for the first Kalayaan Fiesta '98 "Centennial Palaro ng Lahi" which will be opened with a grand ceremony on May 30 by President Ramos at the Quirino Grandstand.
The one-day sports festivity will focus on indigenous games Filipinos have played for centuries.
"This is a dream project of the Department of Tourism and we are proud to become part of it," said Philippine Sports Commission chairman Philip Juico.
The DOT hopes the Palaro will create awareness and interest among Filipinos, especially among the younger set who have of late become more attached to computer games and funfare centers in shopping malls.
Indigenous games to be featured in the Palaro are: palo sebo, patintero, piko, juego de anillo, tiyakad, sangkayaw, sipa bilangan, sipa mudansa, sungka, basag palayok, bunong braso and culliot.
Participants in the games will come from the Overseas Workers' Welfare Authority, AFP, Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, civic organizations and other government offices.
Certain to attract attention are basketball stars from the PBA and the PBL, beauty queens from the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, movie stars representing the Kapisanan ng mga Artista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, Olympic athletes, popular media personalities and other celebrities.
