Manila, May 23, 1998 - Filipino World Boxing Council featherweight champion Luisito Espinosa has gone big time. He has signed a 2-year contract with the US promotions outfit America Presents, which would give the boxer $1 million.
Espinosa will receive a down payment of $100,000 for his 6th title defense fight, against an opponent who has yet to be chosen from a formidable list of seven ranked boxers from Britain, Argentina and Japan.
His first bout will be one of the main events on June 27 at the legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia.
Luisito's manager and wife Maricherie told sports reporters that only a few minor details in the contract remain to be ironed out.
Among the contenders being considered for the June 27 fight are Britain's Paul Ingle, Billy Hardie and Steve Robinson; Agrentina's Pablo Chacom; Japan's Takashi Koshimoto and Takeo Imaoka; and Dramara Nabadourum of Burkina Faso.
All the boxers under consideration are all WBC-rated. Robinson was a World Boxing Organization title-holder, while Dramara Nabadourum is the leading African champion.
