RP DREAM TEAM IN CEBU AND BAGO CITY
Bago City, Negroes Occ., May 17, 1998 - The Philippine basketball centennial Dream Team stopped at Cebu City where they played one game and graced a press conference with PBA commish Jun Bernardino who announced that the professional league is holding an All-Star Fans Day and an All-Star Game in Queen City of the South this season.
A North team was led by MVP awardees Johnny Abarrientos and Vergel Meneses. South team by Dennis Espino and Andy Seigle.
The first All Star game this year will be at the new Cebu Coliseum on July 9, featuring the RP Dream Team against different teams, likely another group of PBA superstars reinforced by imports playing in the Commissioner's Cup.
Coach Cone will put to use the intriguing "triangle play". The play was developed by Chicago Bulls coach Tex Winters in the 1950s. A play that offsets the zone and not the man-to-man defense. Basic play about the "triangle" is the great spacing that forces everybody to touch the ball and it starts with a touch by the big men. "It's all about hitting gaps and spacing and it should work with this team," Cone said.
