RP BOXING TEAM DISBANDED
OVER FUNDS
Manila, May 2, 1998
- The national boxing team, the country's pride and source of medals in
international competitions, has been temporarily dissolved due to the inability
of the Philippine Sports Commission to provide financial support.
The disbanding was announced by Manny Lopez, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines. The country's national squad is composed of 24 certified members including 1996 Olympic Silver medallist Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco.
The boxers stopped training April 15 after the PSC failed to give members of the team their monthly stipend and food allowances. They have appealed their case to President Ramos.
The boxers' training camp in Baguio City is now deserted.
