FASTFOOD COMPANIES BIG ELECTION DAY WINNERS
Manila, May 15, 1998 - While candidates are trading charges of cheating and debating who really won in the last elections, one business sector emerged as the undeniable big winner last May 11 -- the fastfood industry.
Fastfood chains Jollibee, Wendy's and Goldilocks were the heavy favorites of candidates and pool watchers, who kept kitchens working 24 hours non-stop to fill the orders.
Jollibee captured the lion's share of the business, with one outlet filling orders for 6,000 packs of single-piece Chicken Joy with rice and another 6,000 orders for regular yum burgers.
The busiest Jollibee branches were in the first district of Manila, where the orders were paid for by a congressional candidate; Jollibee Baclaran and Jollibee Sumulong.
Wendy's placed second in popularity, as the one favored by LAMMP leaders for food to feed the opposition poll watchers. The franchise of Wendy's belongs to a corporation headed by businessman Jose Pardo, a known supporter and adviser of Vice President Estrada.
For snacks, Goldilocks was the choice. The bakeshop chain sold thousands of pieces of adobo roll, cinnamon roll, mamon and ensaymada.
