WEEKLONG PICNIC FEST IN CANADA CENTENNIAL 98
Toronto, Ontario, Canada, April 25, 1998 - Another mega-Centennial event in this megacity of Toronto is a week-long fiesta picnic from June 6 to 13, at the Earl Bates Park.
Dubbed as the "Philippine Fiesta Picnic and Musical Show-100" Philippine Sundae TV producer Mann Nacario said in a press briefing last Arpil 6 at the Metro Hall that a motorcade of 100 antique cars and floats of various Filipino groups will kick off the centennial event.
The parade is expected to draw 500 participants in native and festive costumes accompanied by 100-piece brass band and mardi gras drummers. Paraders will be led to the Skylight Theatre at the park where a flag-raising ceremony will start the program followed by a 30-minute opening program.
Nacario promised that the picnic luncheon or "Barrio Fiesta Salo-Salo" will start on time right after the opening ceremonies. He is requesting everyone to bring at least two local dishes, preferably the trademark of their regions and at least good for six persons. "This will be shared by all in one big barrio fiesta atmosphere.," he said.
At 8 p.m. a two-hour show will feature artists from the Philippines and from here in Toronto. The day will end with fireworks display.
The second day will be for "Isang Saplot", a fashion show produced by Peter Candelaria. It will showcase evolution of Philippine dresses.
On June 9, the 21-piece Philippine Concert Band led by Pepe Arambulo will bring "Isang Musika". Members of the Folklorico Filipino Canada, under the tutelage of Wendy Arenas will perform "Isang Sayaw" on June 10.
A Christian ministry dubbed as "Isang Himala" is set for June 11 featuring Ray Ann Fuentes and the Praise Proclaimers. On June 12 a gala night is sponsored by the Philippine Independence Day Celebration (PIDC) chairmaned by Dr Kiko Portugal and Vice Chaired by Dr Victoria R Santiago, at the Metro Convention Hall.
On June 13, "Isang Palabas"
features a showcase of Filipino talents. All activities are free. Each
show at the Skylight Theatre will start everyday at 7:30 p.m.
