INDONESIA-RP FLIGHTS DOUBLED
Manila, April 24, 1998 - The Philippine and Indonesian governments have agreed to double the passenger and cargo traffic rights of airlines designated to service the Manila-Jakarta route.
Benjamin Solis, Pacific East Asia Cargo (PEAC) president, said the agreement was reached by both countries in a meeting held in Jakarta, where Indonesia agreed to increase to 3,000 seats a week the Manila-Jakarta flights while cargo was upped to 200 tons from 75 tons.
To accommodate the planned entry of Cebu Pacific Air, the country's other flag carrier, adjustments were made on the traffic rights fro passenger airlines. The changes in the existing RP- Indonesia air agreement will be finalized within 30 to 60 days.
PEAC and Philippine Airlines had been pushing for revisions in the RP-Indonesia air agreement wince 1997. PEAC pushed for an increase in cargo traffic rights, while PAL asked for a relaxation on the restrictions of the type of aircraft used on the route.
PEAC is the Philippines' only all-freighter carrier and provides a regular cargo service to Jakarta. With the new agreement, PEAC plans to increase its weekly haul to 150 tons from the present 75 tons.
