PORO POINT DEVELOPED AS SEAPORT AND AVIATION COMPLEX
San Fernando, La Union, April 23, 1998 - The former US military base called Wallace Air Station on Poro Point is destined to become one of the country's top destinations for tourists, whether they are jetsetters or passengers of luxury cruise ships like TV's Love Boat.
The seaport was turned over to the Bases Conversion Development Authority in 1997, and has since been undergoing renovation to improve its capabilities for warehousing and trans-shipment.
To meet the demands of a large-scale container terminal, close to a million square meters of land will be reclaimed. On the northeastern side of the peninsula, the reclamation will make the port more competitive.
South of the special economic zone is the planned reclamation of 240,000 square meters of land intended for the marina and a residential commercial complex. The marina will have a yacht club, pier, beach facilities and floating docks.
In addition, the existing airport will be upgraded. The runway will be widened and extended to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft such as Boeing 737 and Airbus 300 which make up the bulk of commercial aircraft in the region.
Foreign experts are finalizing a master development plan for the expansion and upgrading of the airport, where an aviation complex will rise which will provide assembly, warehousing and maintenance services.
