PCM-CANADA JOINED MANILA
CENTENNIAL COUNTDOWN

Toronto, Canada, April 9, 1998 - Officers of the Philippine Centennial Movement-Canada Chapter (PCMCC) led by overall coordinator Eduardo I. Lee along with his coordinators Art & Hayda Villacete, Jess & Tess Meneses, Joe Damasco and Ramon Talusan, all from Canada, participated in a Philippine-wide kick-off ceremony for the 100-day countdown to June 12 last March 5, in all provincial capitals of the Philippines.
Heading the ceremony was National Centennial Commission (NCC) chairman Salvador Laurel. Laurel said that June 12 this year is the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence, the climax of the Philippine Centennial celebrations. As part of the kick-off rites, thousands of students, members of the Philippine Centennial Movement marched bearing flags to the Freedom Plaza.
Since 1994, NCC has been supervising preparations for the Philippine Centennial and has worked out the details of programs and project in all government agencies here and abroad. The NCC has also mobilized participation in all sectors of society including Filipino communities overseas.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has started consolidating international participation from various heads of states as well as from Filipinos overseas, the participation of overseas Fillipinos and that of various sectors of the society.
"As of today, international events initiated by Filipino communities abroad, in cooperation with the NCC, the DFA and foreign corporations, will form programs as part of the countdown activities," said NCC Commissioner Luis J. Morales.
