PINAY SWIMMER SCORES IN QUEENSLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
Manila, April 14, 1998 - Filipina Nhemia Velasco, now training in Australia, finished second in the girls' open 100-meter event and girls' 200-meter individual medley event in the 1998 Queensland Primary School Swimming State Championships in Australia.
Velasco, a scholar at the St. Margaret's Anglican Girls School in Brisbane qualified for the national finals scheduled May 2-4 also in Brisbane. The 11-year-old members of the Commercial Club Valley Pool had earlier won the same events in the district and regional competitions to advance in the State Championships.
In the individual medley, Velasco surpassed the qualifying time set by Philippine Amateur Swimming Association for the ASEAN Age Group Championships. She also improved all her records in the Philippine National Games.
She is returning to the Philippines May 31 to compete in the ASEAN Age Group Championships slated June 8-10 in Bacolod City.
