FILIPINO CHESS MASTERS VS WORLD'S CHAMPS
Subic Freeport, April 5, 1998 - Serving as the first part of the Philippine Centennial Chess Championships, the Subic Legend International Chess Challenge brings together the Filipino chess champs in a clash with some of the world's top-ranked chess players.
The 11-round robin tournament where three Filipino international masters, IMs Rogelio Barcenilla, Jr, Nelson Mariano II and Barlo Nadera face recent Polish champ GM Alexander Wojtkiewicz among other world players.
Other Filipino players are GMs Eugene Torre and Rogelio Antonio, Jr, Poland's Mikhail Krasenkov of Super GM, German GM Eric Lobron, Indon Super GM Utut Adianto and GM Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam.
Also joining the cast are Philippine
national masters olympiad veterans Fernie Donguines and Eduardo Ortiz.
The tournament began last March 31 here at the Subic Freeport Zone with
a total purse of P360,000 at stake.
