EDU'S CITIZENSHIP QUESTIONED BY RIVALS
Makati City, April 23, 1998 - Makati Liberal Party spokesperson Jackie Reyes criticized the political rivals of vice-mayoralty candidate Edu Manzano for filing a disqualification case based on Edu's citizenship.
"He is as Filipino as his accusers, and could not have filed his certificate of candidacy if the Comelec knew that he was a compatriot of Bill Clinton," Reyes said in a statement.
The petition was filed by TV chef Nora Daza, mother of LAKAS-NUCD candidate for vice mayor Gabriel "Bong" Daza, erstwhile husband of former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz.
Reyes reminded the Daza's group that Edu's mother was even given an award for bravery during World War II.
To disprove the charges against Manzano, the press was provided documents from the Philippine Bureau of Immigration attesting to his Filipino citizenship.
