GOVT APPROVES WIRELESS CABLE TV SYSTEM
Manila, April 1, 1998 - The Philippine government approved last week a P2-billion cable television project which will use a new technology called Local Multi-Point Distribution System (LMDS).
The project, approved by the Board of Investments and endorsed by the National Telecommunications Commission, is a pioneering project in telecommunications. The company, GHT Network Inc., is 100% Filipino-owned.
LMDS, or cellular vision, provides a balanced programming format, better signal quality and support services than existing providers. It also allows value-added services such as multi-channel interactive television, telemedicine and distance education services, high-speed internet access, video-on-demand services, video teleconferencing, wireless local loop telephony and high speed data transmission.
The project, like cellular phone systems, requires a system of cell sites and repeaters in strategic areas in Metro Manila and other parts of the country, such as Bacolod, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao.
It is scheduled to start in December.
