"GREEN GLOBE" PICKS MALASAG TRIBAL GARDENS
Cagayan de Oro City, March 31, 1998 - The World Travel and Tourism Council has picked Malasag Gardens as a choice Green Globe destination because of the project's sustained environmental protection and preservation.
Green Globe managing director Dick Sissman visited Malasag Gardens in Cagayan de Oro City early this year, and awarded the eco-tourism project a free Green Globe membership.
Green Globe is a program designed by the WTTC, developed in 1994 as a result of the International Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It has a world-wide membership of travel and tourism companies and tourism destinations in more than 100 countries.
The Malasag Gardens, which combines ecology and cultural tourism, offers a rustic setting for tourists who want to take a break from fast-paced activities. The facilities are suitable for camping, field trips and other recreational activities. There are also cottages for travellers who wish to stay overnight or for the weekend.
Various tribes from Northern Mindanao take turns in showcasing their culture through songs and dances and native handicrafts.
Opened only last August, Malasag Gardens had welcomed 64,000 visitors as of last February, and is already proving to be one of the top tourist destinations of the region.
