PHILIPPINE YACHT WINS ACAPULCO-GALLEON REGATTA
Manila, March 28, 1998 -The Acapulco-Galleon Commemorative Regatta, which began at Acapulco Bay, Mexico to retrace the historical Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade route of four centuries ago, was completed recently at the shores of Mactan, Cebu.
The Philippine boat Karakoa arrived in Cebu one day ahead of the Nalu IV of the United States, thereby gathering line honors in the third leg that started from Tamuning, Guam and ended in Mactan.
Karakoa had gained line honors on the first legs, thereby winning the premiere award of the regatta for gaining the most number of firsts across the line.
Organized by the Manila Yacht Club and the Club Yates de Acapulco, the Acapulco-Manila Galleon Commemorative Regatta is under the auspices of the National Centennial Commission.
It started last January 14 in Acapulco Bay and ended in Mactan last week as part of the commemorative events of the celebration of 100 years of Philippine Independence.
Race 1 was from Acapulco Bay to Waikiki Beach; Race 2 from Waikiki Beach to Guam and Race 3 from Guam to Mactan.
