BICOL HAS TREMENDOUS TOURISM POTENTIAL -- GABOR
Manila, March 24, 1998 - The development of Bicol as a premier tourist destination is one of the top priorities of the Department of Tourism.
DOT Secretary Mina Gabor points out that under the Bicol Tourism Master Plan, several projects have already been completed by the Ramos administration: the Hanawan-Consocep Road, rehabilitation of the Consocep Mountain Resort, rehabilitation of the Cagsawa ruins, the improvement of the Mayon Volcano skyline, and the development of the Balongbong Resort.
Other projects to be developed in the region are: Bulusan Lake, Malibsay Falls, upgrading of the Pili Airport to accommodate bigger planes, and the establishment of a Rest Area in the Matnog Ferry Terminal Area as part of the Philippine Tourism Highway Program.
"The completion of all the projects is anticipated to entice visitors to lengthen their stay in Bicol to an average of four or five days. That period should enable them to enjoy the area's abundant natural, historical and cultural attractions," Gabor said.
Longer-staying visitors, she added, would mean a more vibrant Bicol economy because tourism can create more jobs, which in turn could improve the quality of life in the region.
