THE PHILIPPINE CENTENNIAL '98
Manila, March 19, 1998 - Here is an excerpt of the "Meaning of the Philippine Centennial" from the Philippine Centennial Website at http://www.dost.gov.ph/DOST/CENTENNIAL/
The Republic of the Philippines is about to reach its century mark as a nation. Filipinos will take time out for significant events in its history: the culmination of 4 centuries of struggle for nationhood, the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1896, the Declaration of the Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898 and the ratification of the Philippine Consitution by the 1898 Malolos Congress in January 1898.
These events mark the Philippines as having the first constitutional democracy in Asia.
The 100th birth anniversary of Philippine Independence, our centennial, is the milestone that shall be the celebration of our glorious past and future: the emancipation of the Filipino from the tyranny of Colonialism and his transformation into a citizen not only by an independent and proud nation but of the world as well.
The Philippine Centennial represents our history, our struggle and our solidarity as a people. It tells the story of the birth and the growth of the Filipino race. It serves as a reminder of your moral duty to perpetuate the inherent nobility, wealth and strength of our heritage.
