Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, March 15, 1998 - Here is an update on the "Spirit of Kalayaan 98" Centennial celebrations at the Toronto Skydome.

SUN LEAD SPONSORS OF SKYDOME EVENT

CBC Television confirmed it will sponsor the Philippine Centennial Celebration at the Skydome. Over twenty 15-second commercial spots of Spirit of Kalayaan 98 will be aired nation wide starting June 29 up to July 11.
Cable 10 and Fairchild TV also will show our ads. Go Transit also send notice of its sponsorship which consists of flyers and coupons distribution, and display of the Spirit of Kalayaan 98 posters in all Go Stations and Terminals. The event will also be featured in their passenger information newsletter with circulation of 30,000 copies.
Toronto Sun with a circulation of more than 250,000 copies in Metro will give us 4 pages of advertising space to promote the celebration. Scarborough Mirror, Etobicoke and Brampton Guardian also joined in promoting the event. Cascade Canada Cascade main office in the U.S. which gave us a 3,000 sq. foot office rent free at 6175 Tomken Rd. in Mississauga also became one of our first sponsors by donating $15,000.00.
Promotion Cleve Sandy Jr., Production Manager of S.A.V. Productions is one of professionals promoting the project. He was responsible for getting the CBC TV, Go Train and Toronto Sun packages. Cleve, who is married to Maribeth Lalog, a Filipina, has a vast experience in promoting concerts and events in Metro Toronto.
Production Ma. Luz Mangalindan-Padua, an Executive Producer for Radio Philippines Network (RPN) was appointed Production Manager of the Skydome event. She has 17 years of network experience producing Superstar, hosted by Ms. Nora Aunor and German Moreno; John en Marsha with Dolphy and Nida Blanca; Flor de Luna; Gulong Ng Buhay; Eat Bulaga; Kuwarta o Kahon; and It’s Another Deal. She created and produced Long Play Night, featuring Kuh Ledesma; Don en Chap, starring Dodo Gonzales and Vic Lima; It’s a Deal, with Alma Moreno and Michael de Mesa.
Luz also produced and directed Duplex, starring AdingFernando; and Jr. Newswatch, for children from age 7 to 13, and starring Junior Newscasters. Other specials she produced were: 1081 Special for Martial Law; First All-star Local Olympics; two Binibining Pilipinas/Mutya ng Pilipinas national beauty pageants; Hope Grand Extravaganza; TV campaigns of all LABAN Senators; and RPN Anniversary Special.

Search Engines: A search for “ Philippine Centennial, or Philippines, Filipino Canada” on Yahoo will bring up a link to our site. Listings with Altavista, Lycos, Excite, Infoseek, Opentext, Hotbot and Webcrawler search engines will follow.
Cornilla Luna performs: Cornilia Luna of Miss Saigon and the King and I (Broadway), accepted the invitation to perform on July 11. The Committee on Even Implementation is also inviting Paulo Montalban of Cinderella and other cast of Miss Saigon Canadian Production.
Doy Laurel endorses event: Senator Salvador Laurel, Chairman of the National Centennial Commission in a message to his fellow countrymen in Ontario, strongly endorsed the Spirit of Kalayaan 98 initiative to hold the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence at the Skydome.
He said, “It is my wish that each and every Filipino in Ontario will rally to this initiative and contribute in whatever capacity their resources can bear towards the success of this endeavor".
Event planner joins: Vince Vargas, a retired executive who have years of experience in holding events of this magnitude joined to guide and steer the group into a greater momentum. Vince Vargas was president of Insci Philippines Inc. He donated the $200.00 U.S. for the Slogan Contest and solicited the shell of the Spirit of Kalayaan 98 first colorful brochure.
Rank of volunteers swelling: in what is now shaping to be the largest gathering of Filipinos in North America, hundreds of our compatriots, some from the U.S.A. and their Canadian friends have volunteered for the project to insure the success of this, the event of the century.
Finally from the USA: A group, headed by a Dr. Lim from Fort Lauderdale, Florida has signified its intention to participate with the Ang Bisaya, led by Popoy Cana in the re-enactment of the Christianization of the Philippines, bringing with them their props, like a galleon float, etc. Not to be forgotten are the invaluable services of volunteers who act as participants, and those who sell tickets and solicit sponsors.
