WEEK-LONG PUERTO PRINCESA FESTIVAL
Puerto Princesa City, March 4, 1998 - A colorful parade of ethnic costumes, songs and dances opened week-long festivities marking the celebration of Puerto Princesa's 126th founding day.
Ellen Hagedorn, wife of City Mayor Edward Hagedorn, led local officials and residents in welcoming thousands of Filipino and foreign tourists who flocked to the city for the anniversary festivities.
"Tabuan Festival" features an agro-industrial trade fair which showcases the city's agricultural, forest and marine products sold at cost. Also on display and for sale are ethnic crafts, souvenirs and food items unique to Puerto Princesa.
In line with the centennial celebrations of Philippine Independence, the celebration adopted a historical and cultural tone, as evidenced by a Kasaysayan ng Lahi parade depicting the country's glorious past in music and with floats prepared by participating schools and civic organizations.
Wednesday will be the re-enactment
of the first landing of Spanish evangelists on the shores of Puerto Princesa.
The first mass on Palawan Island was celebrated by Father Ezekiel Moreno,
who was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1992 in Sto. Domingo, Dominican
Republic.
