SPORTS COMMISSION RULES ON
ATHLETES' ALLOWANCES
Manila, March 23, 1998 - Philippine Sports Commission chairman Philip Ella Juico announced the new rule on the highly-debated allowances for able-bodied olympic athletes.
Under the new rule, Class A athletes made up of gold medalists in the last Southeast Asiam Games (SEAG) in Jakarta, will receive a monthly stipend of P6,500 and silver and bronze medalists, P3,500.
Non-medalists in the SEAG will receive P2,500 while members of the national training pool will get P2,000 monthly pay. In addition to this, all athletes, regardless of class, will receive a food allowance of P250 a day.
Juico said that, the Philippine Olympic Committee failed to come up with a plan for the athletes' allowance twice and they cannot wait any longer so they decided to make their own for the benefit of everybody.
The Commission's budget for the Asian games have been plugged at P82 million, far below the amount alloted to the 1994 Hiroshima Asiad. Juico said that the new rule has the blessings of the national sports associations, coaches and athletes who met with him in a four-hour meeting at the Mulligan's athletes' canteen.
A copy of the new rule is sent to President Fidel Ramos and Sports Secretary Jalasco.
