PBA: ALASKA STILL ON TOP WITH WIDE LEAD
Pasay City, March 22, 1998 - Alaska retained the lead in the PBA All-Filipino Cup Semifinals team standings, with its latest victory over defending champion Purefoods, 88-68, at the Pasay Astrodome.
Leading with 10 wins in 13 games, Alaska is two games ahead of second placer San Miguel Beer which has only 8 victories in 12 games.
In their last encounter with Purefoods, Alaska was led by Johnny Abarrientos, who shook off an ankle injury to hit seven points in the third period, when the Milkmen went on a 25-12 run to turn a 37-37 halftime tie into a 62-49 advantage going into the final 12 minutes of the game.
That settled, coach Tim Cone sent Abarrientos to nurse his ankle during the entire fourth period.
In the second game, Sta. Lucia held off Gordon's Gin to post a 97-85 victory and improve its record to 6-6. The Boars slipped to 5-7 in the team standings.
