SAILBOARD OLYMPICS AT TAAL LAKE
Talisay, Batangas, March 5, 1998 - Proving that Hobie Cat sailing is not just a young man's sport, senior division (over 50 yrs old) skippers Allan Burrell, and David Wheeler bested all teams but one in the 3rd Taal Lake Marine Sports Festival sponsored by the Department of Tourism. Ed Baardsen, with crew Ceasar Sagpang, captured the first place title for the Hobie Cats held at the Taal Lake Yacht Club in Talisay Batangas last Sunday.
The Philippine Boardsailing Federation (PBF) staged the initial classifier event for their Olympic search series during the Taal Lake Marine Sports festival. Sea Games veteran German Paz maintained his slot over his two time olympian brother Richard Paz who trailed second. Roberto Frego of the national pool ranked third, barely edging out Geylord Cuveta who finished fourth on top of fellow "Youth" (developmental) sailors Reneric Moreno and Bobby Coveta, who laced fifth and sixth respectively among the other national team members that participated in the event.
The promising performance of the developmental sailors (ranging from 15-19 years old) is a reassuring sign for the Philippines to identify a talent and athletic material in this Olympic sport.
