THE BOARS SLID DOWN
Pasay City, March 4, 1998 - Playing coach Robert Jaworski, Sr of the Gordon's Gin couldn't believe his eyes. His Boars found themselves at the bottom of the standings. Fans were beginning to feel there is a curse.
It started in the Feb 7's first out-of-town game in Lipa City against the Sta Lucia Realty. The Realtors skinned the Boars. Although they bounced back after beating San Miguel beer and Purefoods Carne Norte, the nightmare started in Feb 17 when winless Formula Shell beat them in overtime 86-85 as Ritchie Ticzon banged in 3 free throws off Noli Locsin.
Marlo Aquino tipped in a miss by Bal David but that didn't help. The Boars lost to the determined Turbo Chargers. Locsin tried to be fancy and missed a slam dunk.
Three nights later, it was Mobiline's turn to take the measure of Gordon's Gin and prevail 90-83. The Phone Pals played with a distinct handicap. Mobiline's center, Andrew John Seigle crumpled to the floor injuring his right ankle after stepping on foot of teammate Al Solis. Later Al had to be replaced by a smaller Alvin Teng who is five inches short in height against Aquino.
Teng scored eight first quarter points and Seigle came back, the Phone Pals got better and better, the Boars lost.
Then, last March 1st, Gordon's Gin was its worst. The Boars allowed furious Sta Lucia to lead as many as 26 points in the final quarter. Veteran Romeo de la Rosa, vastly improved Dennis Espino and sophomore Jason Webb kept their poise and Sta Lucia triumphed by 93-80.
And so the Boars has suddenly
found itself at the bottom of the standings with a 3-4 card. Coach Jaworski
who is rumored to be doing his last season of basketball has to find an
answer. What's wrong with the Boars?
