Manila, March 10, 1998 - Aiko Melendez and Jomari Yllana want to get married before their baby is born in September.
Yes, Aiko Melendez is pregnant. And yes, Jomari Yllana is the father.
The two revealed in several interviews over the weekend that they've been living together since late last year, over the objections of Aiko's mom. And they can't get married without parental consent, because Aiko is below the legal age of marriage without parental consent according to the New Family Code.
Jomari says they had tried to get married last year, but the new law prevented them from securing a marriage license from their friend Paranaque Mayor Joey Marquez.
Aiko will take it easy for a while, Jomari says. "I want her to be a person, to enjoy life without working too hard. I'll be the one to work. She's been working since she was six; she deserves a break."
The two will try everything to get married before September. "I want our baby to carry my name," Jomari said.
Under the New Family Code, a baby born out of wedlock can legally carry only the mother's last name.
