GENERAL SANTOS AIRPORT USAGE UP
Santos City, Feb. 28, 1998 - Three commercial airlines are now flying in and out of General Santos City International Airport, the second largest in the country.
Built on a 600-hectare reservation 12 kilometers from the heart of the city, the GenSan International Airport has a 3,200-meter runway capable of accommodating large international passenger, military and cargo aircraft.
Commercial flights of Philippine Airlines, Mindanao Express and Air Philippines have been landing and taking off from the GenSan airport regularly. PAL flies 5 times a week on a direct Manila-General Santos-Manila route using the Airbus 300, a daily Cebu-GenSan-Cebu flight using Fokker 50, and twice a week there are flights to and from Iloilo City.
Mindanao Express has daily flights to the cities of Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga using 19-seater Beechcraft 1900.
Air Philippines has daily Manila-GenSan-Manila flights using B737-200. The same type of aircraft is used for the airline's Cebu-GenSan-Cebu daily flights.
Development of the General Santos International Airport has brought tremendous relief and convenience to residents of the Socsargen area, who accounted for 30% of the 707,000 passengers using the Davao Airport in 1996 and 1997. The new airport has also opened up the General Santos area to tourism and investment possibilities.
